Joseph Estrada
Jose Marcelo Ejercito, popularly known as Joseph Estrada, was born on April 19, 1937, in Tondo, Manila. His parents were Emilio Ejercito, an engineer, and Maria Marcelo.

He took up Engineering as the Mapua Institute of Technology  but failed to finish it because he entered showbiz. He proved to be a good actor. He won the best actor award five times and he was elevated to FAMAS Hall of Fame. He established the Movie Workers Welfare Fund. His films often depicted him as a defender of the oppressed. Because of his popularity, he was called Erap, an inverted "pare" meaning friend or godfather.

Joseph Estrada's Political Life

He was elected Mayor of San Juan in 1967. His leadership was lauded and he was awarded as one of the most efficient mayor in Metro Manila. When President Marcos was ousted in 1986, Estrada was also unseated. He was elected senator in 1987. He became Vice President in the elections of 1992. He was appointed chief of the Presidential Anti Crime Commission. Under his leadership, many criminals were apprehended and charged. He ran for President in 1998 and won over Jose de Venecia by landslide.

As president, he abolished the Countryside Development Fund which is popularly known as "pork barrel". He supported the Visiting Forces Agreement  for joint military exercises of American and Filipino soldiers. Estrada declared was on Muslim terrorists and in year 2000, the AFP was able to take the biggest camp of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front.

In October 16, 2000, Gov. Chavit Singson of Ilocos Sur accused him of being the mastermind of jueteng. This led to his impeachment by Congress on November 13, 2000. During the bearing in the Senate, senators close to him voted against opening an envelop alleged to contain evidence damaging to him. This was followed by a call by Cardinal Sin for second people power revolution, called the EDSA DOS on January 17, 2001. Two years later, high ranking officers of the AFP withdrew their support for Estrada. This prompted him to leave Malacanang Palace on January 20, 2001. Vice President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo was sworn in as the new President.

He was arrested, confined and tried for plunder starting October 2001. He defiantly denied the accusations. On September 2007, he was found guilty of plunder and given a life sentence. But six weeks later, he was pardoned by President Arroyo. It is widely believed that he still has the support of the masses.

Joseph Estrada is married to Dr. Luisita "Loi" Ejercito. Later on his wife and son, Jinggoy were elected senators.
